Fire trucks!

I've been struck in the past few days by the frequency with which I encounter fire trucks with their sirens on. Sometimes they try to get through crowded streets and barely make it. Although I recognize the vital importance of giving right of way to emergency response vehicles, it strikes me that the urgency with which people treat them is inversely proportionate to the frequency with which they encounter them. San Francisco is not that big, with scarcely over three quarters of a million people. Are we just filled with pyromaniacs?
